Off Topic

Ah, the classic WWF Summerslam logo, brings back memories. Yes indeed, the time is drawing near. The WWE's biggest party of the summer is this Sunday (the 27th annual version of the PPV) and I'll be watching, via the glorious WWE Network of course. During this post, I'm going to focus on three things:

*this Sunday's card (along with my thoughts and predictions on each match
*my top 3 favorite Summerslam PPVs of all time
*the greatest matches in Summerslam history

Let's get to it!

SUMMERSLAM 2014

WWE World Heavyweight Championship Match
John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar

We'll start right at the top with the main event. If you count their match from Backlash 2003, this would indeed be the "rubber match" between the two, but don't let WWE hear you say that, lol. This is the somewhat anticipated rematch from Extreme Rules 2012, which was a VERY good match (with a BS finish) and I recommend you check it out if you haven't seen it. For some of the buildup both men have not been on Raw for different reasons, but what we got has been mostly good. I'm not sure if this will come close to being better than their match from 2012, but I'm looking forward to it, and I guarantee you there will be a "big match feel" in the building. As far as the winner, I honestly don't care who wins, however, considering how Lesnar has been booked this year, including ending the Undertaker's streak at Wrestlemania XXX (a decision I'll never agree with), all signs should point to a Lesnar victory, but with WWE, you never know what they're going to pull in a situation like this. They have all but booked themselves into a corner and it's going to be interesting to see how they get themselves out of it.
Predicted rating: ****1/2

Stephanie McMahon vs. Brie Bella

With all due respect to both ladies, I wonder how the wrestlers who will not make the show (and those who will) feels about this essentially being the second most important match on the card. This is another match where I don't care who wins. If Brie wins, that should end the storyline right there, but if Steph wins, look for it to continue into Night Of Champions in September.
Predicted rating: **

Randy Orton vs. Roman Reigns

This will be the first true test or Mr. Reigns in a singles match on the second biggest PPV of the year. I liked him a lot when he was in The Shield, but at this point he's not winning me over just yet. He may end up growing on me a little more, but we'll see. Randy Orton will be Randy Orton, and what you see is what you'll get. This pick may not make some people happy, but I'm going with Orton to win this match, whether it sets up a series of rematches for the remainder of the year or not.
Predicted rating: ***

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

I'm not into Bray Wyatt like everyone else seems to be, plus I haven't been a fan of this feud at all. I've always been a fan of Chris Jericho, but I wonder why he even came back. Considering that Jericho won their first encounter at Battleground, Wyatt will likely win this, setting up the third and final match between them at Night Of Champions. This is another one where I don't care who wins (notice a trend), and after NOC, that should be it for Jericho and his returns. Much like the feud with Cena this year, this has done nothing for Bray Wyatt.
Predicted rating: **1/2

Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
Lumberjack Match

Heading into Battleground last month, this was the hottest feud on WWE TV, but you wouldn't be able to tell that now, because for some reason they've all but cooled this feud off. I did predict that they would have some sort of a stipulation for their match, but a "lumberjack" setting is the last thing I would've predicted or greenlighted. I'm sure we'll get a very good match and I'm going with Dean Ambrose to pick up the win. Either way, I look for this feud to continue after Summerslam.
Predicted rating: ***1/2

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev
Flag Match

This has been a decent feud and it has breathed new life into Jack Swagger. My pick would go to Swagger, but I honestly see them giving Rusev the win since he's the one that'll continue to be pushed after this show. I hope Swagger is not put on the backburner after this one.
Predicted rating: **1/2

The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match

It's simple, Miz retains to the shock of no one. It still should be a good match though.
Predicted rating: ***

AJ Lee vs. Paige
WWE Divas Championship Match

This feud has picked a little steam within recent weeks. I'll go with AJ retaining her title, with a likely rematch at Night Of Champions.
Predicted rating: *1/2

As of this posting, there may be a WWE Tag Team title match, relegated to the "pre-show", involving the Usos, Ryback & Curtis Axel, and probably Erick Rowan & Luke Harper, and Goldust & Stardust. I'm not sure why this couldn't make the card, especially considering that the Usos have been involved in the best match on the show for the last couple of PPVs. With no tag team challengers on the horizon at this point, I look for the Usos to retain in a good match to start the show (I'd be surprised if the titles change hands, on the pre-show no less).

Overall, this looks to be the best card on paper since Wrestlemania XXX. I feel we're going to get a good show this Sunday.
