2013 Grammys- The Hip Hop side

The Grammy Awards have sort of had a love/hate relationship with the world of hip hop. Over the years, I (and others) can name many artists that have deserved to win a Grammy at some point in their careers, but unfortunately it didn't happen. What I plan to do in this post is talk about the recent nominees, and present my thoughts as well as my winning picks.

Before you begin to read on, I just want to let you know that although I'm normally objective, a few of the nominees I've all but made it clear I'm NOT a fan of, and that will be reflected in the thoughts I present.

Best Rap Performance
*Drake f/ Lil' Wayne - "HYFR (Hell Ya F---ing Right)"
Thumbs down for this. Next!

*Jay-Z & Kanye West - "N---as In Paris"
One of my favorite songs from last year. Hot beat and lyrics.

*Nas - "Daughters"
Classic Nas here.

*Kanye West f/ Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz - "Mercy"
Even with the likes of Big Sean and 2 Chainz on this, I overall don't care for this song outside of Kanye and Pusha T's verse.

*Young Jeezy f/ Jay-Z & Andre 3000 - "I Do"
Good song here, featuring a show stealing verse from Andre 3000.

My pick
I want to go with Jay-Z and Kanye, but I'll go with Nas on this one!

Best Rap/Sung Collaboration
*Flo Rida feat. Sia - "Wild Ones"
I honestly never heard this song, and probably don't have a desire to check it out.

*Jay-Z & Kanye West f/ Frank Ocean - "No Church in the Wild"
Awesome.

*John Legend f/ Ludacris - "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)"
This song is ok, but not Grammy worthy in my opinion.

*Nas f/ Amy Winehouse - "Cherry Wine"
Oh man, this is one of my favorite tracks on "Life Is Good". Nas was excellent as usual, and the late Amy Winehouse absolutely shines on the hook.

Rihanna f/ Jay-Z - "Talk That Talk"
Another good one.

My pick
If I could go with a tie, it would be between "No Church in the Wild" and "Cherry Wine".  Oh man. I'm going to go with "No Church in the Wild" by a SMALL hair.

Best Rap Song
*Nas - "Daughters"

*Wale f/ Miguel - "Lotus Flower Bomb"
I heard this song A LOT last year, but that doesn't mean I like it, lol. Wale is overrated to me, and overall I didn't care for this song at all.

*Kanye West f/  Big Sean, Pusha T & 2 Chainz - "Mercy"

*Drake feat. Lil' Wayne - "The Motto"

*Jay-Z & Kanye West - "N---as In Paris"

*Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa f/ Bruno Mars - "Young, Wild & Free"
Oh hell no! ANYTHING with Wiz Khalifa in it does NOT deserve a Grammy nomination.

My pick
This is an easy one. Nas' "Daughters".
And last but not least.......
Best Rap Album
*Drake, Take Care
1) I never heard this album. 2) I have NO desire to hear this album. 3) I'm NOT a fan of Drake.

*Lupe Fiasco, Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album, Pt. 1
I was a little surprised to see Lupe nominated, but I'm cool with it. This was one of the best albums of 2012, even though the buzz it had at the time of its release has died down considerably.

*The Roots, Undun
I was also surprised to see this listed, considering that it came out at the end of 2011. It's still an excellent album, which is something you normally get from The Roots.

*Nas, Life Is Good
2012's BEST album, bar none.

*Rick Ross, God Forgives, I Don't
SMH, who the hell would nominate Rick Ross for ANY award, let alone one for BEST rap album??

*2 Chainz, Based on a T.R.U. Story
SAME QUESTION, who would nominate this guy for a Grammy also, smh? Ignorant music (I won't even call this hip hop) should NOT receive this type of recognition.

My pick (and additional thoughts)
Hands down Nas DESERVES to win this, as not only did have the best album in 2012, but he has LONG deserved to win a Grammy and I feel it's his time. I'm not saying it because I'm admittedly biased towards him, but honestly this is his time. I would cool with a win by The Roots or Lupe Fiasco, no question. Drake, Rick Ross, or 2 Chainz?????? In a word, NO!!!!! And here's the sad part. Considering how things are in hip hop currently, as much as I DON'T want to say this, I feel this award is going to come down to either Drake, Rick Ross, or 2 Chainz winning, mark my words. And if that happens, something (continues) to wrong with my culture.

Overall, I'll be anticipating this show and I hope my picks come to fruition. Will there be a blog post on the winners?? Maybe. Stay tuned and thanks for reading!!!!!

  2. The Drake album was great and you should actually take the time to listen before you say something is bad or isn't worth it but besides that I agree with everything.
